A t the meeting of 27th February Millie Parker gave an Inspirational talk about how she had overcome a Brain Injury to operating her own business and becoming a major advocate for disability services.
As a result of a high speed car crash Millie was severely injured and close to death. Milly went on to explain that she went through a significant period of rehabilitation and that her brain injury would always impact her life, including:
- Difficulty with numbers Lack of concentration when reading, just to highlight a few of the difficulties she still faces on a day-to-day.
By focusing on living life to the full and focusing on what she can achieve rather than what she cannot cannot she feels she has improved her life.
An idea to make pet treats has been turned into a business called Happy Yappers which now supplies David Jones Stores and even Harrods in London.
Milly is also actively involved in advocacy work for people with disabilities, their families and carers. Her recent roles have been
- Member of the National Disability Advisory Council (having firstly been involved at local then State level).
- National Ambassador for International Day of People with Disabilities in 2012.
