At the meeting of 2nd September our speakers were from the Maori Wardens
This is a voluntary organisation of Maori and Pacific Islander Elders.
They work with young members of their community to help them avoid taking the wrong path in their lives.
Wardens regularly patrol in the evenings to talk with young people on the streets about the Maori/Pacific Islander cultures and look to engage these people in a positive way.
Although they do not see their role as enforcing the law their positive approach appears to be successful in reducing poor behaviour around public transport.
At the close of the meeting the club made a donation to the Wardens in recognition of their contribution to their community which also brings benefits to the community as a whole.
