Our speakers at this weeks meeting were Alex Rojas and Darleen Christensen from South Western Melbourne Medicare Local.
Alex and Darleen work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families of Wyndham and Hobsons Bay through the Indigenous health initiative ‘Closing the Gap’.
Their talk included
- How they were able to engage with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.
- Health issues such as Diabetes that are one of the reasons for the ‘Gap’ in life expectancy.
- Various initiatives, such as healthy eating that they are using to improve the general health of the community. One initiative being the fortnightly community kitchen at Mambourin.
As part of the ongoing engagement with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community the club will be assisting South Western Melbourne Medicare Local with their Annual Cultural Open Day in March 2015by
